Does this look like a bowl? It is a bowl but it’s not just a bowl. It’s a reminder of young love. When my husband and I were engaged, he was living about two hours away from me. He was just starting out in his career and I was finishing up my last semester of college. For Valentine’s Day that year, I wanted to make him a nice dinner and one of his favorite desserts – a cheesecake. I drove to his apartment and let myself in while he and his roommate were working. The neckties and dress socks Keep Reading...
The Tale of Two Brothers
For the past several months in addition to thinking about privilege – which I wrote about here - I have also been contemplating leadership. Two brothers gave me a clear picture of leadership. Brother #1 played football in high school. Every day he and his buddies suited up and ran unto the practice field. They sweated and froze – often at the same time since it was in a Northern state. The coach was the type who would try to motivate the team by yelling at them that they were stupid, slow, Keep Reading...
The Tale of Four Men
For the past several months I have been thinking about privilege and what that means and what that looks like. Four men helped shape my thoughts and I want to share them with you. This post is longer than usual so grab yourself a cup of java - or stiff drink. Man #1 – He grew up in West Texas and lists his birthplace as "in Mitchell County in a farmhouse by a creek.” He and his brother spent their days as elementary age boys picking cotton in their bare feet. At night, they would lay on the Keep Reading...
An Inchworm and Kindness
Be kind. Everyone keeps saying, “be kind” but I am not seeing much kindness being spread around these days. Several things have happened in my little corner of the world the past few weeks making me grow grumpy and struggling to find the positive – and for this Pollyanna-ish person, that is a rarity. Years ago when I was in college, I ordered a salad from Wendy’s. You read that right; I ordered a salad at Wendy’s instead of a single with cheese, no tomatoes with fries and a diet coke. At Keep Reading...
My 2020 Mood…Afghan
My house was full of people during the Covid lockdown and forced work from home so it wasn’t until several weeks ago I was able to do a CCC - Covid Closet Cleanout. Tucked on a shelf in a closet was a Mood Afghan. I threw it on the bed, laughed and thought, “If I made one of these this year it would be black and gray.” My next thought was, “Or would it?” Let me back up and explain what a Mood Afghan is for those of you who stumbled over the words above. To make a Mood Afghan, you collect Keep Reading...
I Have An Addiction!
I’ll admit it. I have an addiction. An addiction to one large unsweet iced tea every day. I know I can make it myself. My husband reminds me quite often – like daily. But it doesn’t taste as good as Sonic, Chick-Fil-A or even McDonalds. The tea may taste the same as what I can make at home but the ice is better at the drive-through. To be honest, I usually go to McDonalds because it’s only $1 all the time. Probably because their cups are the worst. Sorry, I’m getting off topic. When I Keep Reading...
What the World Needs Now
I was swimming laps in my pool trying to beat the already almost unbearable Texas heat last week. I was on my back kicking across the pool when a sight in the sky stopped my swimming and started my thinking. I quit kicking and floated on my back - looking up. Way above me were white trail marks of airplanes and I watched a large bird lazily fly back and forth with the white streaks as its backdrop. A few yards above me, a mockingbird flew by. As I watched the two birds in the sky above me, a Keep Reading...
So You’re Working From Home – Tips to Help
Day two of social distancing found two of my adult daughters sitting by the pool and my husband working from home. I was trying to keep busy as the world seemed to be changing around me by the minute. I sprayed the weeds in my beds, applied pre-emergent and attempted to clean out the gutters. When I walked out back with the pooper-scooper, one of my daughters said, “Mom, you have a lot of jobs.” As I did my dog-owner version of an Easter egg hunt, I thought about her comment. And I thought Keep Reading...
Is the Best Really Yet to Come?
I heard it again this weekend. “The best is yet to come!” Is it? Is “the best” really on the horizon? “The best is yet to come” has become a popular saying from the pulpit, a meme, a catchy catch phrase. It's meant to encourage. And maybe even to sell books. I'm all about encouraging people. I want people to look forward and not behind. I want them to look on the positive side of things. I like the flower - not the thorns. I like the half full glass - not the half empty glass. I like Keep Reading...
A Few of My Favorite Things – (My Last in the Series) – #6 The Elizabeth House Maternity Home
(If you were here the past two weeks, skip a few paragraphs to those squiggly lines and meet my friend. Otherwise, read on.) Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens. I grew up singing those words along with Julie Andrews but now I have my own list of favorite things. To those who read my words and follow my blog, I’m going to do something different and new. The next few weeks, are going to be hectic for me and I am going to be working on Keep Reading...
