I kind of live in the country. By “kind of” I mean that I live in a neighborhood with land between my neighbors and a bit of a drive to “town.” Well, it’s only four miles away but I drive past pastures to get there so it seems further and feels like the country.
It is quiet in my neighborhood so I was a little shocked when I heard what sounded like a helicopter flying low over my house. It sounded like it was going to land on my house. I ran outside to see what was happening.
Nothing. No helicopter in sight. And I didn’t hear it anymore. Weird.
I went back in and heard the helicopter again. I dashed outside again but this time I went out the back door.
Nothing. No helicopter. Back inside and out the front door. Nothing.
That’s when I realized the loud helicopter noise was only detectable inside my house! I was pretty sure there wasn’t a helicopter inside my house.
After some investigating, I realized the noise had something to do with the air conditioner and quickly turned it off and called the A/C company. It’s never good to have a helicopter sound coming from your A/C unit.
A technician arrived later that day and I explained the helicopter noise to him.
“Oh, I think I know what that is. Let me go up in the attic and check something.”
He was only gone for a few minutes but during that time my mind was calculating how much a new A/C unit was going to cost. I thought something must be really wrong if my A/C unit sounds like a helicopter is landing on my house.
I pensively awaited the bad news when the technician reappeared. He didn’t speak at first.
“Uh, oh! This is going to be expensive. He’s trying to figure out how to break the bad news to me,” I thought.
I watched the technician shine a light into the air vents in my living room. And then in my kitchen and bedroom. What was that? Something was coming out of the vents!
The technician finally spoke, “I knew exactly what we were dealing with when you told me about the helicopter noise. When your A/C unit was installed, someone left the manual in the unit. The fan grabbed it, shredded it and sent little pieces through the ductwork. That is what you see hanging out of the vents.”
“Someone left a manual IN the A/C until? And you knew what it was because it has happened before?” I questioned.
“Yes, ma’am. It’s happened a few times.”
“Do you need to get the manual out?”
“No, ma’am. It was completely shredded. That’s what I checked. You may have more paper come out in the vents but the manual is gone now.”
“Well, I’m glad it wasn’t a helicopter landing on my house.”
Things aren’t always what they seem. Thank goodness it wasn’t a helicopter!
The noise wasn’t what I thought it was. Sometimes the noise in our lives fools us. If we listen to the wrong noise, we can spend our days – or lives – confused.
I grew up thinking I would attend a certain university but when I didn’t get accepted, I was devastated. Really devastated. But now, I know that university would not have been a good fit for me – and it wasn’t where the love of my life was. He was waiting for me at another school.
If I had listened to the noise of disappointment, I would have missed the joy and excitement of the “right for me” university.
The noise of the world can derail our beliefs and convictions if we listen to the wrong voices and don’t plug in to the source of Truth – Jesus.
You can be like me, running outside looking for the helicopter and confused there isn’t one. And then back inside. And out again – only to discover shreds of paper floating to the floor in the form of your dreams and plans.
So watch your step, friends. Make sure there’s no evil unbelief lying around
that will trip you up and throw you off course, diverting you from the living God
