Today’s post is for my friend whose day was derailed by one quick phone call. I think we have all heard the joke or read the e-mail about the man who comes home and the house is a mess, the kids are still in their pajamas running all over the house, dinner is not even a thought and as he opens his bedroom door he finds his wife still in bed from the morning. When he asks her what she is doing, she calmly puts the Bon Bons down and replies, “You know all those times when you’ve asked me what I Keep Reading...
Meat Skewers and Leg Casts
It seems like most parents have categories for each of their children. You often hear them refer to their kids as the clumsy child, the athletic child, the child with allergies, or the smart one. When my girls were little and a group of mothers would get together, you would often hear someone refer to a child as “a climber,” “a good sleeper,” “a good eater” or “a picky eater.” I have been guilty of referring to one of my daughters as “the one who throws up a lot.” And I usually have a mom in the Keep Reading...
Chicken Poop in My Garden
I love having a vegetable garden. I love the idea of planning my dinner by what I can get from my garden. For years, my husband did not share my enthusiasm for a garden. He would often say that his garden was at the nearby grocery store and it didn’t require any sweat or strained muscles. Once it became a competitive event, he was very helpful in the Keep Reading...
Sailing
“Sailing. Takes me away. To where I’ve always heard it could be. Just a dream and the wind to carry me. And soon I will be free.” When I heard Christopher Cross sing those lyrics as a young teen, I envisioned myself smoothly sailing with nothing but peace, sunshine and a cool breeze tickling my senses. During my last semester at Texas A&M University, I decided I would learn to sail. I needed six credit hours in order to graduate so I was enrolled in the first summer session. Keep Reading...
An Imposter
I wasn't planning to post anything about bike riding for a while but yesterday changed that. Be patient. I promise to change topics next time. Cycling is popular where I live. Daily I see the cyclists with the skintight shirts hunched over their bikes - whizzing down the roads near me. They have sponsors on their shirts. I have a bike and like to ride. There are dirt trails in the area where I live that were designed for hiking trails but I thought it would be challenging to ride my Keep Reading...
Pedaling With a Chihuahua On My Foot
A few months ago, I had fifteen small stitches taking out of my shin after having a minor surgical procedure to remove my very gross – I mean, my varicose - veins. Between the vein surgery and the fact that it has been hotter than Hades, I haven’t ridden my bike in about four months. With a very faint hint of fall in the air, tonight seemed like a good night to get back in the saddle – the bike saddle. I filled my water bottle, aired up the tires, downloaded new worship songs and off I went. Keep Reading...
