#1 People don't people watch at airports anymore - they phone watch. Everywhere I looked, I saw people looking down at their phones. No one paid any attention to others around them. Could this be a major contributing factor to the increasing narcissism in our society? Years ago, I friend of mine had a professor make the prediction that "the Walkman will ruin the art of conversation. People will listen to a device and stop talking to each other." We were so enamored with the new technology that Keep Reading...
What I Found in my Closest in the Middle of the Night
I had a son that died. Full term. At birth. Unexpected. If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you may not know that about me because I have only mentioned it once – though it shaped me and my faith. Why don’t I write about it? Because I choose to chuckle. I choose not to dwell on it. Though his death shaped me, I refuse to let it define me in a negative way. I was raised by a dad whose favorite motto and motivator was, “If the sun doesn’t come up, grab a lantern and Keep Reading...
Choices
I went to the paint store today to pick out some paint for my dining room. The first time I picked out paint, I chose poorly ~ so I was choosing again. I walked up to the display that held those little strips of paint colors and was overwhelmed. I fought back a panic attack. How was I supposed to make a decision with so many choices? How was I was supposed to pick a paint color from one little strip of color when there were a kazillion choices. And we all know the little chip of a Keep Reading...
Beach Day with God
Several of my friends are facing very hard things in their lives right now. These trials reminded me of my beach day… Stay strong and brave, friends! Last spring, my husband and I were fortunate enough to be taken on a trip around the coast of Spain. We didn’t really know anyone on the trip very well so one day we found ourselves at the beach by ourselves. I wanted to go to the beach but my husband – I’ll call him Jack (because, well, that is his name) – did not care to be at the beach but I Keep Reading...
The Stubborn Stake
A few years ago, we bought a tree and had it planted. Until the tree could establish a root system, it was staked with a heavy duty T-post. For those of you wondering “What’s a T-post?” Well, a T-post is a metal post with a triangular plate at its base that is pointed like an arrow so that it goes in to the ground easily but can’t be pulled out easily. In order to get it out, you have to dig it out. During a drought three years ago, the tree died. Before we knew it, the tree transformed Keep Reading...
I Have to Use a What?
At my last dental visit, the gal that scraped the tarter and gunk from my teeth advised me to get a waterflosser - aka - a WaterPik. I value good oral hygiene so I went straight to Bed Bath and Beyond and picked out the best WaterPik system I could afford. I took it home and stuck it in my closet because 1) life was busy, 2) it seemed complicated and 3) I wasn’t so sure about the whole “it’s time for a WaterPik” thing. Yesterday, I pulled it out of my closest and I had every intention of Keep Reading...
I’m So Mad!
I am so mad! Really, I’m not mad at all. But if you ask my teenager or young adult children, they will tell you I am mad. Why do they say that? Because when I text, I use periods at the end of sentences. Oops! I did it again! And, I reply to texts with “K” instead of “ok!” or Okay! Or Okie dokie! Or :) :) !!!!! But never “OK!” because that is yelling! I’ve also learned not to respond with “sure.” Apparently, that has negative connotations and people think I’m mad. Somehow, I Keep Reading...
Baby Bird, Baby Bird
It’s that time a year when baby bunnies and baby birds are venturing out. Today I was driving through a neighborhood and saw a little bird in the middle of the street flapping its wings. I thought it was hurt until I got closer and realized it was probably just in the middle of flying lessons. I was sure there was a momma bird sitting in a tree overhead chirping out flight instructions. I learned the hard way not to get involved with this procedure. Once, I found a similarly aged little Keep Reading...
Have a Nice One
Whenever I check out at the grocery store or department store or corner gas station and the person hands me my receipt and says, “Have a nice one,” my brain almost explodes. It is only with great restraint that I don’t pipe up and respond with, “Have a nice one what? A nice walk in the rain on the way to my car? A nice dinner? A nice trip and fall? (Which I’ve done on the way out of a store more than once.) A nice day at the dentist? A nice shark attack? A nice hernia? A nice, big glass Keep Reading...
Bunny Rescue
A few years ago, my girls were visiting an aunt during Spring Break and I had a few glorious days at home – all alone. I decided to use the time to organize closets and cabinets and create an uber organized sewing center.I was working hard to finish up one night when I realized that our dog, Jessie, had been roaming in the woods for some time. When I went out to call her and yelled "treat," she came running out of the woods and up the hill. She hesitated when she got to the door. Keep Reading...
